Sovereign Wines Bring Home Awards

Six Sovereign Estate wines recently won recognition from the most influential international wine competition in America, the San Francisco International Wine Competition (SFIWC).

The SFIWC has been setting the standard for professional wine judging since its debut in 1980. Now in its 38th year, the SFIWC maintains the highest level of integrity with a blind-tasting system performed by a highly experienced panel of internationally acclaimed wine experts. A SFIWC medal is accepted worldwide as a reliable indication of wine excellence. Wines recognized as medal-worthy by SFIWC judges are universally understood to be among the very best. The 2021 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition was completed on March 5. Over forty-eight judges, representing various North American wine regions, evaluated nearly 5,700 wines from over 1,000 wineries.

2021 SFIWC awards for The Winery at Sovereign Estate:

2019 Merlot – Double Gold

2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Reserve – Silver

2019 Marquette Reserve – Silver

2018 Marquette Grand Reserve – Bronze

2018 Marquette – Bronze

2019 La Crescent – Bronze

“Year after year we have seen our wines perform well in national competition, and to be recognized for both our cold-climate varieties and traditional varieties speaks to the focus on quality in all the things we do at Sovereign Estate. As our vineyards and winery continue to mature, I am expecting the quality of the wines to likewise continue to improve.” – Ben Banks, Winemaker

ABOUT SOVEREIGN ESTATE: The Winery at Sovereign Estate produces world-class award-winning wines using both estate-grown Minnesota grapes as well as grapes sourced from other high-latitude vineyards. The estate is located on the north shore of Lake Waconia and boasts the largest estate managed vineyards in Minnesota, growing exceptional Marquette, La Crescent, and Frontenac Blanc grapes under viticulturist Isaac Savaryn. The wines are vinted by winemaker Ben Banks, using techniques both traditional and modern, specific to each variety, to fully express their unique characters.
